Dept. Of Periodontics

Periodontology or Periodontics (from Greek peri "around"; and odons "tooth") is the specialty of dentistry that studies supporting structures of teeth, diseases, and conditions that affect them. The supporting tissues are known as the periodontium, which includes the gingiva (gums), alveolar bone, cementum, and the periodontal ligament. A professional who practices this specialty field of dentistry is known as a periodontist.

About the Department

Established in 2003, the Department is largely concerned with preventive oral health services and maintenance care. Preclinical lectures and seminars, laboratory exercises, and clinical assignments have been developed to provide training in the variety of procedures delegated to the dentist within the dental practice setting. These experiences are sequenced in an organized manner that provides for continual growth and competency in performance of all traditional and expanded-function procedures. Courses that encourage analytical thinking and problem-solving techniques that enhance the ability to evaluate the latest in research are important adjuncts to clinical training.

The department boasts of a total area of around 3076 sq feet which includes well-equipped undergraduate clinic, spacious post graduate clinic with electronic chairs and state of art equipments in the clinics including lasers.

The Treatment procedures routinely done by the doctors in the department, either conventionally or laser assisted include;

  • Flap Surgery
  • Bone Grafting
  • GTR
  • Esthetic Periodontal Surgeries
  • Gingivoplasty
  • Dental Implants
  • Hard and soft tissue augmentation procedures

Department Features

  • The department has separate working clinics for Postgraduate and Undergraduate students complete with individual Sterilization bays.
  • A central store room looks after the overall sterilization and disinfection of instruments, Materials, working area and laundry.
  • Weekly seminars, journal club presentations and tutorials for students are conducted in the Seminar room.

We also train students for further training in Periodontics & Implantology. The Department of Periodontics provides instruction and clinical experience dealing with the etiology, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases of the periodontium in adults. Postgraduate students are encouraged to use the latest equipments like implant, lasers, sinus elevation tools and microsurgery.

The research programs are numerous and diverse
These include clinical research programs in the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease, modeling of the progression of periodontal disease, studies of new regenerative and Implant techniques, and studies of the link between periodontal disease and systemic diseases.

The Department has numerous publications to its credit in national and international journals. The goal of the Department is to provide the undergraduate and postgraduate student with a strong educational foundation in periodontology for their future careers in Dentistry and to contribute new knowledge through basic and clinical research in Periodontics.
